All across the state of Alabama, drunk driving accidents cause unnecessary injuries, death and family tragedy. But among all of the cities and towns in Alabama, Huntsville ranks as number one in the number of drunk driving arrests. This is not a single year anomaly; this is the 15th straight year in which Huntsville has ranked first.
The police officers who enforce the state's drunk driving laws often see firsthand the fatal results of senseless drunk driving accidents. One officer shared the story of a drunk driver that struck a couple on a motorcycle. Being hit from behind by the drunk driver, the husband was ejected and thrown into the bed of the pickup truck in front of him. The wife was also ejected and was killed when she struck the pavement.
The state-leading number of drunk driving arrests in Huntsville, is at least partially a function of enhanced enforcement efforts by law enforcement officials. In their efforts to keep our roads safe from drunk drivers they employ a number of tactics including DUI checkpoints and a dedicated unit of seven officers who focus solely on getting drunk drivers off the streets.
Last Friday night at a single DUI checkpoint, the police arrested six individuals for DUI and impounded five vehicles. While the checkpoint was set up at a spot that they believed would have a high rate if drunk drivers, it is still troubling that at just this one spot the caught six individuals driving under the influence in a matter of just a few hours. Each of these drivers could have easily a serious accident had the police not intervened,
